Nu1ce (pronounced “nuance”) is a group formed in 2010 by musician/producer IV the Polymath, emcee/producer Jondis, & emcee/producer Diles in order to create a completely spur-of-the-moment EP in under 72 hours. Here’s the story…

"Diles called & invited me to an Ohio State football game last summer. We’d been building for a few months by then & the drive was fairly short so it was a go. Originally we were just going to get together & chill, but once Jondis got wind of the trip, the dynamics changed completely - in a good way.

Next thing you know we had a plan outside of football and beer (not our idea of a dope weekend) - we were going to make music. Not your average hotel suite music either – we were bringing our gear.

Driving up from NY, Jondis came armed with his turntable, Microkorg synth, studio monitors & some percussion instruments. Coming from Indiana, I brought my almighty MPC & a handful of records. Finally, flying in from New Mexico, Diles managed to get his microphone, preamp, & macbook on the plane to complete the vocal setup.

No one really knew what to expect. I’d never met Diles before & I hadn’t seen Jondis in months. You’d think that when we arrived there would be some of that “How’s it going?” type of stuff, but instead of asking each other about our travels, we immediately went into a frenzy setting everything up. It wasn’t even a full hour before the beats were blasting & the notebooks were out.

Throughout the weekend we experienced “beats, rhymes, & life” in its finest form & even got to spend most of the second day out on N. High Street digging in the crates. It was mad fun & we hope that thru these 6 tracks & the video footage, you can get a feel for the experience & have some fun as well.

Everything was done in less than 3 days, the music is unmastered, & the project is free so if you don’t like it – no hard feelings. If you do – let us know!

Never Sleep II Bookmarks

Peace friends. Just a quick note to let everyone know about the Never Sleep II Bookmarks that were printed up by the good people over at Hip Hop Alumni. This is the first bookmark in their series called The HHA Bookmark Initiative which is used to promote reading among the youth as well as bring books about hip hop into libraries throughout Texas & New Mexico.

Those that know me know I'm big on using music to create social awareness & raise money for important causes & these bookmarks do just that! Supplies are extremely limited, but I do have 10 left. If anyone is interested in purchasing one, you can grab it here for 3 dollars.

Peace! Here's a new video by the homie Cory P. of Sassbologna Records. I recently sent him a huge batch of beats to create visuals for as inspiration struck & this is what he came up with. It's the first of a series that will be a collaboration of his video work & my music. Peace everybody - Happy New Year & all of that stuff. Here's an instrumental I made today on the MP...

Got a lot on deck this year including full-length albums with Jondis (i.deals) & also Junclassic (UnderCurrent). I'll be handling all of the production & scratches on these projects as well as spitting a hook or two. I've also been building with some really dope emcees & will be dropping some EPs & the like with cats that you may or may not already be familiar with.

Also in the works is a DVD type of project with Cory P. from Sassbologna Records that will be a collaboration of my music and his (dope) artwork. Last but definitely not least, I'll be dropping a number of (mostly) instrumental LPs, EPs, & a few singles. As always, I'll be dropping freebies, videos, & podcasts here & there to keep it interesting.

Peace everybody! Been a minute since the last update. I've been working on lots of new material since the release of Drum Machines Have No Soul & will provide more details on this in the near future. I've got a lot of ill stuff lined up for you guys!

Until then, check out this dope new compilation put together by my man Cory over at Sassbologna Records! It features 19 tracks by some of the label's artists, including myself. The two tracks I contributed to the project are previously unreleased so definitely drop some feedback with your thoughts!

Last Fat Beats Trip Ever

Had a chance last week to fly down to NYC & kick it with Junclassic. You know we had to hit Fat Beats! If for some strange reason you didn't know they were closing the stores this weekend than read this.

I guess it's a sign of the times, but damn it hurts music. I wrote a long piece about the effects of the digital age, but decided to keep it light for this blog.

Anyway, it was dope as always to chill with Jun & I also got to meet the legendary DJ Eclipse for the first time. I could go on all day about the food, the women & the overall energy that NYC has to offer, but I'll just say peace to Fat Beats for now.

First off - huge thanks to everybody who supported "Drum Machines Have No Soul" in any way. It has been receiving positive reviews & enjoying some underground radio play at the moment which is dope. Peace to all the blogs & websites that posted it & a special thanks to those who donated to the project. I'll be dropping 10% of the funds to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital at the end of the month.

What up everybody? With the recent increase in support I wanted to say thank you to everybody for listening to my music & spreading the word. Knowing that you guys enjoy what I'm doing provides a lot of inspiration to keep it coming. Drum Machines Have No Soul is just the beginning! New instrumental & vocal projects, vinyl mixes, random videos and a lot more will be popping up in the coming weeks & months.

If you've been following for a while now you know you're not gonna hear a gun shot in any of my songs. I'm not on some get money shit. I would eventually like to team up with legit charities & do performances & projects to raise money for good causes.

For now I just want to encourage people to peep St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. I'm going to donate 10% of the money made from Drum Machines Have No Soul to them.

They're doing some serious work to help children with cancer. If you've had a loved one with this type of disease then you know where I'm coming from. This is the only place of its kind in the US that doesn't turn people way because of an inability to pay. That's no joke.

I did a lot of background checking before I made this post & they are one of the few legit places out there & one that I want to support. & yo this is not an advertisement so don't get it twisted!

Where's the Polymath?

Peace everybody. I've been getting a lot of emails & messages lately & I appreciate your interest. I try to get back to everyone personally, but sometimes I can't. Here are some quick updates...

First of all, I'm chilling in NYC right now in a hotel room recovering from surgery. Everything is cool - just fixing the basketball injury I've talked about before. Needless to say, this is why no new instrumentals have dropped lately. I'm hoping to get back on the MPC in a couple of weeks if possible so stay tuned - everything will be back to normal soon!

2nd of all, Polymath Records is up & running! The first release "Push IVward" will get sent to press as soon as the artwork is completed. Expect a release date in March. Pre-order information will be posted very soon.

Also, a bare-bones myspace page has been created for those who want to keep up with the label. Send a request if you'd like @myspace.com/polymathrecordings.

3rd of all, I was able to record the February 2 Raw Mixtape before I hit the road, so that will drop on the first of the month & in my opinion is even more dope than the first 2.

New youtube videos, guest mixes, interviews & other stuff will also come to fruition in February so check back soon!

Happy New You...

Peace everybody & happy new you! Hope you guys have all laid out goals for 2010 & are already making steps toward making things happen.

I've decided to change things up a little bit for the future. I'm going to work smarter instead of harder. This new method will take many forms, including a short 1-2 month break from the Bee Hive. Those of you who have been following me for a while know that I stay up all night every night and literally never sleep in order to create music. It's been really dope living in this alternate reality, but changing things up never hurts.

As an independent musician, there are no managers, publicists, etc. in my circle. This means that in order to be successful, I have to get out of the studio and spend time networking and promoting myself. The upside to being independent is that no one can control the direction of the music.

That being said, be on the lookout for dope new projects as well the continuation of existing ones...

1) Push IVward - This instrumental album will be released in the first quarter on CD. Will consist of mostly newer (& better) material.

2) NEVER SLEEP II - Collection of instrumentals created immediately following NS1. This will drop on colored cassette only and will be limited to 100 copies. (Sassbalogna Records)

3) 2 Raw for the Average Listener Mixtape - Monthly series continues & will begin to venture into new territory not seen in the first installment.

4) Album with Junclassic - We've finally begun work on our group LP entitled "Spectrum." More updates on this as details emerge.

5) Live Performances - I will be getting out and doing shows this year after laying low in 2009. Buffalo, Rochester area and beyond. Don't hesitate to contact theonlyiv@gmail.com if you want me to rock your show/venue. Will also be setting up some events of my own in order to combine visual art with music to support nonprofit organizations.

6) Radio Play, Interviews, etc. - Keep an eye out as some radio appearances, print & video interviews are planned for 2010.

7) Other dope projects & collaborations not yet named. Gotta have some suprises ya know!?

Peace & welcome to the first installment of the “2 Raw for the Average Listener” mixtape series. For this particular session, I’ve decided to include some familiar gems to get things started. In future editions you can expect to journey much deeper into the crates.

There’s nothing that can compare to that feeling you get when you discover something new and beautiful. I hope to be able to provide that feeling to some listeners and bring a smile to the face of others who are already familiar.

November Updates

What up everybody?

Lotta updates going on...

First of all, make sure you come thru and bookmark the blog I'm writing for now. It's run by DJ Underdog who is Damu the Fudgemunk's brother. It's a dope blog that covers a range of topics including healthy vegetarian/vegan food, dope ass music, events, art and more. Definitely check me out over there as I'm trying to post every day.

2nd - a lot of you guys know that I'm finishing up a masters degree in Psychology next month - because of this I'm pulling 12-14 hour days working on papers and what not, so the instros aren't going to be coming as regularly as before, but they will pick back up very soon.

3rd - I am working with an investor to release my first official album tentatively titled "Push IVward," It's going to be all instrumentals (including cuts & scratches) and is gonna be released hopefully either december or January. It's going to be released in CD format. Hopefully going to have Joe Buck doing the artwork (you might know him from the cover of "De La Soul is Dead").

So basically, all the way around it's gonna be a really dope project and the beginning of me releasing my own albums without a middleman or shady label head. Also, if you guys come out & support this effort, I promise to start releasing albums on wax!

Thanks for continuing to support what I do - the music is only going to get more advanced from here on out.

We as a society have chosen convenience over substance. The fast food analogy can be applied here – a drive-thru Big Mac, fries & a coke is much quicker & more convenient than breaking everything down into its purest form & building a meal from scratch. We know that preparing our own food is better for us & even more rewarding, yet we often choose McDonalds instead because it is easy & convenient.

We know it is not good for us so we say we will begin to eat healthier tomorrow & that this is our last day of poor nutrition. That day turns into a week, which turns into a month & so on.

Why wait when we can improve now?

The revolution will not be televised, so you might as well put down the remote & get involved! Look below the surface & see what’s going on. Become involved with something meaningful or better yet make it happen yourself.

Good music still exists, just not on commercial radio. Great art is everywhere, just be more aware of your surroundings. Great people walk among us, we just have to pick our heads up from our cell phones/ipods/computers in order to look them in the eye.

Valuable ideas are within us all, we just have to let them out & not be afraid of being different. Our uniqueness is what makes us beautiful.

No one is great at everything, but everyone is great at something. What are you great at? How are you contributing?

First of all, mad respect to everyone who downloaded NEVER SLEEP. In just 5 weeks, the total number of downloads is over 2500! Special thanks to Mr. Grim, Jwho, Semantik from Crate Kings, Mute Beat, Rock the Dub, Global Grind, Hip Hop Lead, Lee (repshowhost) and all the other blogsites/people who helped spread word. Big up to Junclassic for lacing the final two tracks on the LP. If you haven't heard the album yet, you can still download it for free here.

Things have been quiet on this page, but I've been keeping busy on the MPC since the release of NEVER SLEEP. I picked up over 100 new records already this month (including the sexy red & white ones in the pics) & have been putting them to good use. I also received a Sitar as a gift and am learning how to play it. I've been playing a lot of guitar recently as well & have even made some new beats with no samples.

Expect a few exciting things to happen in the near future. I'm currently working on my first full length album with an emcee. I'm not gonna name names yet, but those of you who know me already know who it is. For those of you who don't, trust that it's gonna be a dope project! Really trying to push the boundaries of hip hop on this one, both sonically & lyrically. The plan is to have the group release in 2010 so stay tuned for more info as things develop!

I'm also going to be working with a new friend on an instrumental for a mixtape project inspired by the television show "The Wire." I'll post it when it comes to fruition. Another interview is also in progress & will be posted when completed. If you missed the last one, you can check it out here.

Last but not least, a new instrumental I've created is set to be on an upcoming show/podcast for XM radio! More details about this project at the end of the month. And of course, as always, you can hear the latest material I've been working on here.
